Who developed the National Automated Facial Recognition System?

It is very, very difficult to catch the criminal when any crime is committed anywhere in the country. Because these criminals always try to escape through various methods. But the government has taken a decision to catch these criminals quickly and has given permission to a new platform called National automatic facial recognition system. Recently a question was asked in an exam regarding that permission. This question was asked in APPSC Group 1 exam. Let's see what that question is. It is a piece of technology. Advances in technology have also made it easier to catch these criminals.

Q: The NITI Aayog recently approved a proposal to study the use of facial recognition technology in India. In the case of facial recognition technology, consider the following statements:

  • The National Automated Facial Recognition System (NAFRS) is being developed by the National Informatics Center under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology.

  • The biggest drawback of facial recognition technology is that it is real time rather than in photos and videos

The NITI Aayog recently approved a proposal to study the use of facial recognition technology in India. So we know. Various projects require NITI Aayog's approval. NITI Aayog has approved this project called facial recognition technology.

Which of the above two statements is false? Now let us see which statement is correct

1️⃣ National Automated Facial Recognition System (NAFRS) is being developed by the National Informatics Center under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (NIC).

  •  This statement is false ❌️

Let us see how this statement is wrong. However, NAFRS is known to be developed. It is also known that NITI Aayog has given its approval in this regard. But under whose auspices it will be developed i.e. – National Informatics Center (NIC).

What is NIC? It is a government wing. It works under which ministry i.s. Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology.

All the points mentioned so far are correct!!

But what is the wrong point here? Regarding this

  • This development is not done by NIC. ❌️

  • It is developed by NCRB (National crime records bureau). It is developed by NCRB and implemented by NCRB. ✅️

Technology is right, development is right, NITI Aayog approval is also right, but it is not NIC that is developing, it is NCRB. So statement 1 is false. ❌️

2️⃣ The biggest shortcoming of facial recognition technology is that it is limited to recognizing people in real time, not in photos and videos.

  •  This statement is false ❌️

Let us see how this statement is wrong. Any technology has some drawbacks. What is the biggest shortcoming of this facial recognition technology – it is limited to recognizing people in real time, not in photos and videos.

So what does this mean? It recognizes a human only if there are humans in real time, but it cannot recognize a human by seeing it in a photo or in a video. It is given here that it is a big world.

But that statement is wrong. Why is that?

  • A technology is being developed that can identify a person not only in real time but also in photo and video if that person is wearing a mask.

  • Another important thing is that the criminal has the ability to identify the person or the criminal even if the person who committed the crime has done various attempts to escape and has undergone plastic surgery.

Detecting in real time, not in photos is wrong. This is a technology that helps identify the person from photos, videos, face masks, even those who have undergone plastic surgery. We can say that this is an amazing technology.

So both the above statements are also false. ❌️
